Robowar (1988)

Oh Bruno, do you have no shame?  Another Italian produced knock off film from the amazing Bruno Mattei who gave us the previously reviewed Aliens/Terminator knock off 'Shocking Dark'  This time Bruno doesn't even bother to try to mash movies together and gives us a straight up rip of 'Predator' starring the one and only Reb Brown of the sci fi epic fantasy 'Space Mutiny'.

This movie really gives no fucks about copying such a huge Hollywood film like the 'Predator' which only released one year prior to this actually, and in a way it's kind hard to really go much into this movie since it's an almost scene for scene copy of 'Predator' minus the budget, good editing, good effects, and a decent soundtrack.  Now I do have to say the movie is elevated in large part due to our main star Reb and his constant yelling and screaming throughout the entire movie.  If you are a MST3K fan then you know all about Mr. Brown's famous screams.  

There's something out there, and it ain't no copyright lawyer

The movie's characters and plot are pretty much recreated here but poorly.  'Predator' is a b-movie concept that was propped up by amazing production values, while this is just the same movie without any of of the quality.  Several lines are taken direct from 'Predator', and so many scenes are directly lifted and copied like the famous "stick around" segment.  So did they change anything at all in this movie?  Well the hunter is no longer an alien, it's a cyborg created by the CIA or something like that.  Also, there is no getting to any choppers.  Seriously the movie has helicopters at the start  but you couldn't at least give us a knock off "GET TO DA CHOPPA", done by Reb Brown for a big finale?  Huge missed opportunity.

The cyborg looks like it was put together with a mix of biker and paintball outfit parts and he shoots lasers that literally go pew pew.  It's fantastic!  This is so bad, I loved it.

Robowar is glorious crap, and one of the most fun knock off films to come out of Italy.  Typically they produced fake sequels and original copy cats, but this is even more of a blatant a rip off than 'Shocking Dark' was.  The cheapness of it all, campy acting, it all is such wonderful cheese and it's amazing this movie never got the riff treatment from the MST3k folks.  Anyways everyone knows how 'Predator' plays out, so instead of going into this movie anymore, here is a lovely collection of Reb Brown screams from Robowar!
