Basket Case 2 (1990)

Yikes, this one took me a couple years to actually watch.  I've tried and restarted it several times over the years, but always end up just turning it off which I rarely do for a movie.  I finally was able to finish this, and boy it's painful.  Produced nearly 8 years after the original, we got much of the original creative team behind the original involved in the sequel, yet it feels completely different.

The original Basket Case was far from being anything other than trash, but it did have this gritty nature to it that also still gave it a dark and creepy atmosphere.  The original had an almost grindhouse slimey aesthetic to it that is completely gone here with it's slick presentation.  With part 2 we have the ending of the original pretty much completely changed as our twin brothers somehow survived and promptly escaping from the hospital with the help of some new characters who apparently adore freaks of nature.  Everything about this movie just feels different, and if it's trying to be a dark comedy, it really sucks at it.  There is no way this was meant to be a serious horror film and it sure as hell doesn't try to be funny.  Intentionally bad to be ironic?  I highly doubt it.

We are introduced to a whole house of freaks that just are so awful in design and concept.  These new creatures are so bad, and even with updated makeup and effects, you end up missing the awful cheap Belial puppet used in the original movie.  This is a movie I just felt embarrassed to be watching as it's just not good at anything and somehow even with it's subject matters feels like a kids movie gone wrong.  There's not much to say about this movie, the freaks rise up to protect their own and kill off some folks and then they have a dinner party.  We get some puppet sex which sets up part 3 (ugh), and I just cringed the entire time.  This movie was creepy for all the wrong reasons.
